Traditions... Free Us

by Gayathri Durairaj

Tradition is an inherited pattern of thought,
It dives into the depths of what our ancestors were taught!
But when it harms and hinders us,
It starts to loose its basic focus!

Anywhere with traditions we will find,
Our gender, positions, roles strongly defined!
It attempts at altering our right of free thinking
And freedom of speech and writing!

Shouldn’t love and respect come from within,
It doesn’t come by forcing tradition,
Everyone is born equal,
Tradition must reinforce this to all the people!

We’re wrapped in chains even after education,
Forced to succumb to trivial traditions!
Stuck and feeling totally encumbered,
Simply by the old customs rendered!

Hypocrisy guffaws at us, it’s common!
I crave for a day our ideas turn into action!
Stop listening to the voices that tell you to suppress,
Don’t quell this if it leaves you in distress!

We ponder,is this the tradition we grow up with?
Or maybe our elders’ theories on it?
If it binds us and keeps us in a cage..
Why should it be called an advantage?

Traditions dictate our routine,
Heralding our lives from the very beginning!
Until our death, to it we are firmly tied
Setting us free only after it’s tide...

Generations together we’ve endured its effects...
We wonder do we need all of it in a life so complex?
This is why we’re often forced to say,
‘Traditions often get in our way’!
